Highways hurt!!

I wonder what it is about highways that makes people compare them to their own lives?

Is it the long winding routes, sometimes broad, sometimes narrow, sometimes smooth, sometimes(and in mumbai, MOST times) bumpy, sometimes straight, sometimes winding?

Is it the fact that these routes take you to places that you had read and heard about before, but never actually seen , and hence, experienced before? Places which look and feel so different than you had imagined them to be?

Is it because every time you come to a fork in the road and you choose one road, you wonder where you would have been had you taken the other route?

Is it the fact you go through your journey knowing the person next to you well, the other people in the bus lesser, and the assorted other humanity(like drivers, salesmen, etc.) not at all?

The fact that taking a U turn is not allowed in the fast lane?

The fact that the highways are ONLY THE MEANS to get from one place to the other, and hence just the transit, and NOT the destination?

I wonder..

Hum ek Milestone ki tarah hai..
Log aate hai... log chale jaate hai..
Hum wahi ke wahi reh jaate hai..

Excellent thoughts....with nothin to do in an unknown city and roamin the streets , sittin in buses and lookin out for signs and markers that make sense, strikin up conversations with perfectly unknown people to get words out of ur mouth, words which seem to be hovering in ur mind but not seemingly able to find any outlet, seein places and malls which seem so full of people and yet so borin and lonely and gettin down at the end of a long journey from one end of the city to the other and feelin sad that the journey ended cuz now u have nothin more to look forward too but the return journey is what i have been goin thru...seriously struck a chord somewhere....and ur blogs r becomin addictive. Keep up the good work :)

The great thing in this world is not so much where we stand, but in what direction we are moving... highways...(which btw i think are a very apt metaphor for the road traveled) signify that very innate need to take a road/path...and as for the U- turn ..i believe that even life gives you chances to do an about turn...question is are we brave enough to do it..there is a chinese proverb that says" no matter how far u have travelled down the wrong road ...turn back"...the cross roads and forks are in my opinion what adds diversity to an otherwise mundane existence..they are the perennial "If-only's".."could have beens" of life..and nothing captures this existential dilemma better than Frost's aptly titled "The Road Not Taken"...it ends with sigh..even a trace of regret when he writes---
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
